Seven Sensible Tips for a Stress Free Holiday in Queensland

As I was born in tropical North Queensland on the Atherton Tablelands, and have worked in and traveled to most parts of Queensland, I feel that I can offer some great tips and information for you.

TIP NO 1 WEATHER The weather cycle in Queensland is the same throughout Australia with our summer months being December, January and February. Autumn months are March, April and May and winter months are June, July and August. Spring months are September, October and November and are very pleasant.

TIP NO 2 DAYLIGHT SAVINGS Queensland does not operate daylight saving and local time is always 10 hours in front of GMT. Other states of Australia do operate daylight saving times from the first Sunday in October to the first Sunday in April, so be aware of this if you fly into Queensland from other Australian states.

TIP NO 3 METRIC SYSTEM In Queensland the metric system is used so all distances are in kilometres (km’s), speed is in kilometres per hour and petrol/fuel is sold in litres.

TIP NO 4 DRIVING IN QUEENSLAND Driving in Queensland, Australia and hiring a vehicle – Most hire companies will ask to see a valid un-restricted driving license and if this is in English this will usually be accepted. However if you have a licence which is not in English, you should first obtain a valid International Driving Permit before you leave your home country. Australia requires a “1949 Convention IDP”. And don’t forget, drive on the left side of the road. And always ask the hire company if you are allowed to drive the hire vehicle on a dirt road or you may have your insurance cancelled.

TIP NO 5 VOLTAGE The nominal mains electrical voltage is 230 Volts in Australia. As plug sockets require the Australian Standard plug pin arrangement, travel adaptors can be purchased within Australia, usually at airports.

TIP NO 6 EMERGENCIES 000 is the National emergency number in Australia and this is used for all emergency services including Fire Service, Ambulance Service and the Police.

TIP NO 7 MOBILE PHONE USE Australia has a modern telecommunications and mobile telephone network which includes 3G services to most parts of Qld. Check with your mobile company to see if “International Roaming” is available and this service can be activated for you whilst in Australia. Phone companies operating in Qld include Telstra, Vodafone, and Optus.

INFORMATION ON QUEENSLAND Queensland is home to about 4 million people and is the second largest state in Australia. Areas of Queensland in the interior are vast and sparsely populated, while coastal areas have a denser population. Tourists love the average summer temperatures of 25 degrees celsius (77F) and the average winter temperatures of 15 degrees celsius(59F). Brisbane is the capital of Queensland with about 2 million people in residence.

Me with Humphead Wrasse, Great Barrier Reef

Queensland stretches from the northern tip of Cape York to the south east at Coolangatta on the Gold Coast. The most popular holiday spots range from the Gold Coast to Cairns in North Qld, which is a driving distance of about 1760klms.

Expertly written by a local author, it features 13 tailor-made itineraries designed to cover all the recommended sights and attractions, including Cape York Peninsula, the Whitsunday Islands and the Kuranda Scenic Circuit. However, you can fly into the Brisbane airport in South East Qld, Maroochydore airport on the Sunshine Coast, Hamilton Island airport in the Whitsundays, Townsville airport for North Qld, or Cairns international airport for a tropical vacation. There are about 40 airports throughout Queensland, large bus companies and fast trains available, so getting to your destination is easy.

Surfers Paradise - Gold Coast

Most holiday resorts offer a free courtesy coach to take you directly to their door after collecting you from the airport, railway station or bus depot. There are many online places to choose your accommodation from and in all areas of Queensland. Accommodation is divided into several classifications including hotels, apartments, resorts, motels and Boutique accommodation, resort caravan parks and Bed and Breakfasts. As a guide, apartments and cabins tend to have more extensive ‘in room cooking facilities’ for people looking for a self catering holiday.

If you want to explore a part of Outback Queensland, hop on a flight to Longreach from Brisbane using Qantas (2hrs 25mins), jump on a bus tour to Winton and visit Lark Quarry where 93million year-old fossils capture a dinosaur stampede. A museum has been built to shelter and protect these dinosaur tracks.

Longreach

If you love your comfort, travel in a luxury air-conditioned tour coach or if wanting to be adventurous and drive yourself, hire an air-conditioned four wheel drive vehicle from Longreach. The 179 klm road from Longreach to Winton is sealed but from Winton to Lark Quarry it is a badly maintained dirt road. I learnt the hard way. The red dust seeped into our 1985 Mazda T3500 bus, which has no air-conditioning, when my husband and I traveled to Lark Quarry. The dust was quite unpleasant which is why I suggest you travel in an air-conditioned vehicle. Still, we enjoyed the end result and would not have missed the experience of the Outback.

Winton is known for its water supply which pushes its way to the earth’s crust from three artesian bores, all around 1,200 metres deep gushing at a temperature of 83 degrees Celsius.(195F) The water comes from the Great Artesian Basin which provides water for almost all areas of Australia’s Outback.

Accommodation is available in Longreach and Winton and most of these places will book your tours. Discover attractions like the Stockman’s Hall of Fame, Qantas Founders Outback Museum, the Waltzing Matilda Centre and the School of the Air.

A visit to The Sunshine Coast will give you a never forgotten vacation and you can get to this area on an air-conditioned coach, by rail or a hired vehicle. It is only about a 1.5 hour trip from Brisbane. Or you can fly from Brisbane directly into Maroochydore airport where you will have a large choice of accommodation. Again, most resorts offer a courtesy coach pick up.

When you visit this vast state of Queensland, I hope these tips and information enable you to enjoy your vacation, in Australia, ‘down under’.

If you are wanting a fantastic holiday in the sun, take yourself to one of Queensland’s wonderful East coast areas like the Sunshine Coast. Or perhaps you would prefer a tropical vacation at one of Queensland’s Whitsunday’s island resorts off The Great Barrier Reef. Hotel Adelaide

Intercontinental Hotel Adelaide

Getting discount tickets to Adelaide, South Australia in a raffle was just the thing to turn our routine lives upside down. All of a sudden, there was much rushing around, planning, getting things in place, and constantly looking up tourist spots and Adelaide hotels on the Internet.

We did our hotel bookings first. After much debating, we decided on booking rooms at the InterContinental -  a stylish, very classical option. With over 387 beautiful guest rooms, this luxury 5-star Adelaide hotel is located in the heart of Adelaide, overlooking the Torrens River. The hotel boasts of a well-equipped gym, and a spa area with steam room and sauna, plus a hydrotherapy swimming pool. I guess if I got tired of sightseeing, I would do well to relax in the spa, and make good use of their range of massages and treatments!

Mangrove Boardwalk

On my second day, I was keen to visit St Kilda, an extensive 1.7 kilometer mangrove ecosystem. As a student of ecology, I have always been fascinated by mangroves, with their unique fauna and fragile ecosystem. This trip gave me enough material for several term papers!
A visit to the South Australian Museum was definitely warranted, when I heard that it has many diverse exhibits, including Aboriginal and Pacific artifacts, an Ancient Egypt section and some of the world`s oldest fossils. An entire day of browsing this museum has only left me wanting to see more of it.

Adelaide is known as the City of Churches, and not without reason. You will get to see some beautiful historical churches, such as the Holy Trinity Church on North Terrace, known as the Pioneer Church of South Australia. The church`s clock is noteworthy, having been made by the clockmaker to King Edward IV.

barossa valley

It is not possible to visit Adelaide and not give the wineries of the nearby Barossa Valley a go. A wine city, Adelaide is close to many excellent vineyards and wineries where you can taste wine to your heart’s content, and buy a few choice bottles of vino at prices that would widen quite a few eyes back home!

All said and done, it was an educational trip for me, a history and nature buff. Adelaide has something to offer everyone; cultural events, arts and crafts, natural and historical artifacts, amazing scenery, and the best wines you have ever had. A visit to Adelaide is a must for those who want to take it all in! You’ll find more info on the Adelaide Intercontinental here

Adelaide is the capital city of South Australia. In Adelaide, you can enjoy stylish architecture, boutique shopping, sandy swimming beaches, fabulous arts events, nightlife, fine dining, and some of Australia’s best café strips. Its population is slightly over 1 million, which makes it by far the largest city in the otherwise sparsely populated state. It is also known for having the conveniences of a large city, while at the same time being far less cosmopolitan than the “Big Four”(Australian cities)

Adelaide is centrally located among the wine regions of McLaren Vale, Barossa Valley and Clare Valley, all of which are within day-trip distance. Source: wikitravel.org

Adelaide is the fifth-largest city in Australia. Adelaide has an estimated population of more than 1.28 million.

Adelaide is a coastal city situated on the eastern shores of Gulf St Vincent, on the Adelaide Plains, north of the Fleurieu Peninsula, between Gulf St Vincent and the low-lying Mount Lofty Ranges. The suburbs reach roughly 20 km (12 mi) from the coast to the foothills but sprawl 100 km (62 mi) from Gawler at its northern extent to Sellicks Beach in the south.

As South Australia’s seat of government and commercial centre, Adelaide is the site of many governmental and financial institutions. Most of these are concentrated in the city centre along the cultural boulevard of North Terrace, King William Street and in various districts of the metropolitan area.

Today, Adelaide is noted for its many festivals and sporting events, its food, wine and culture, its long beachfronts, and its large defence and manufacturing sectors. It continues to rank highly as a livable city, being in the Top 10 in The Economist’s World’s Most Livable Cities index. Source: wikipedia.org

The Barossa Valley

The Barossa Valley is a major wine-producing region and tourist destination of South Australia, located 60 km northeast of Adelaide. It is the valley formed by the North Para River, and the Barossa Valley Way is the main road through the valley, connecting the main towns on the valley floor of Nuriootpa, Tanunda, Rowland Flat and Lyndoch.

The wine industry plays a major role in the Barossa, being the main source of employment for many residents. The many hectares of vineyard are the most distinctive feature of the area, especially when viewed from the Mengler Hill lookout positioned on the range of hills that form one side of the valley itself. The success of the wine industry has historically been celebrated every two years (odd numbers) with a week-long Barossa Valley Vintage Festival. The festival draws visitors from all over the world and has entertainment for all tastes including a huge street parade, concerts and gourmet dining.

The Barossa Valley is primarily known for its red wine, in particular Shiraz. Normally large proportions of Barossa Shiraz is used in Penfolds Grange (Australia’s most famous wine). Other main grape varieties grown in the region include Riesling, Semillon, Grenache and Cabernet Sauvignon. There are also some fortified wines traditionally produced in the region. In the vicinity of Melbourne, gold was discovered during the 1850′s, sparking the Victorian gold rush. By the 1880′s, Melbourne had become a very large and wealthy city, comparable with other wealthier cities in the world. The gold rush brought a large numbers of migrants from China and Ireland, increasing the population of the city significantly. When the Federation of Australia was established in 1901, Melbourne became the national capital for the Commonwealth of Australia until 1927, after which the newly constructed city of Canberra was declared as the capital of Australia.

Well know as the sporting and cultural capital of Australia, Melbourne is home to events such as the Australian Open Tennis, Formula 1 Grand Prix, AFL Grand Final, International Cricket matches, museums, arts galleries and many fine restaurants. Melbourne was also home to Australia’s impressionist art origins at the Heidelberg School and is also the home of contemporary dance including such styles as the New Vogue and Melbourne Shuffle styles.

melbourne-tram.jpgVery few people would know that the largest tram network in the world is in Melbourne. The Economist magazine had been ranking Melbourne as one of the Most Liveable Cities in the world consistently. UNESCO had classified Melbourne as City of Literature, while RMIT had ranked Melbourne as one of the top five cities having highly rated universities. The moderate oceanic climate of Melbourne can suddenly change due to the varying wind patterns and pressure systems. Even though the citizens of Melbourne call the city climate as ‘four seasons in one day’, it is a city of moderate weather most of the time and Melbourne tours are always relaxing.

Melbourne from Wikipedia:

Melbourne is the capital and most populous city in the state of Victoria, and the second most populous city in Australia. The Melbourne City Centre (also known as the “Central Business District” or “CBD”)is the hub of the greater geographical area (or “metropolitan area”) and the Census statistical division—of which “Melbourne” is the common name. As of June 2009, the greater geographical area had an approximate population of four million. Inhabitants of Melbourne are called Melburnians.

The metropolis is located on the large natural bay known as Port Phillip, with the city centre positioned at the estuary of the Yarra River (at the northern-most point of the bay). The metropolitan area then extends south from the city centre, along the eastern and western shorelines of Port Phillip, and expands into the hinterland. The city centre is situated in the municipality known as the City of Melbourne, and the metropolitan area consists of a further 30 municipalities.

It was founded in 1835 (47 years after the European settlement of Australia) by settlers from Van Diemen’s Land.It was named by governor Richard Bourke in 1837, in honour of William Lamb—the 2nd Viscount Melbourne. Melbourne was officially declared a city by Queen Victoria in 1847. In 1851, it became the capital city of the newly created colony of Victoria. During the Victorian gold rush of the 1850s, it was transformed into one of the world’s largest and wealthiest cities. After the federation of Australia in 1901, it then served as the interim seat of government of the newly created nation of Australia until 1927.

Today, it is a centre for the arts, commerce, education, entertainment, sport and tourism. It is the birthplace of cultural institutions such as Australian film (as well as the world’s first feature film), Australian television, Australian rules football, the Australian impressionist art movement (known as the Heidelberg School) and Australian dance styles (such as New Vogue and the Melbourne Shuffle). It is also a major centre for contemporary and traditional Australian music. It is often referred to as the “cultural capital of Australia”.

Melbourne has been ranked as one of the top three World’s Most Livable Cities by the Economist Group’s Intelligence Unit (since 2002), top 10 Global University Cities by RMIT’s Global University Cities Index (since 2006) and top 20 Global Innovation Cities by the 2thinknow Global Innovation Agency (since 2007).

Article from articlesbase.com

Canberra is the capital city of Australia. With a population of over 345,000, it is Australia’s largest inland city and the eighth-largest city overall. The city is located at the northern end of the Australian Capital Territory (ACT), 280 km (170 mi) south-west of Sydney, and 660 km (410 mi) north-east of Melbourne. A resident of Canberra is known as a “Canberran”.

The site of Canberra was selected for the location of the nation’s capital in 1908 as a compromise between rivals Sydney and Melbourne, Australia’s two largest cities. It is unusual among Australian cities, being an entirely planned city. Following an international contest for the city’s design, a blueprint by the Chicago architects Walter Burley Griffin and Marion Mahony Griffin was selected and construction commenced in 1913. The Griffins’ plan featured geometric motifs such as circles, hexagons and triangles, and was centred around axes aligned with significant topographical landmarks in the Australian Capital Territory.

The city’s design was heavily influenced by the garden city movement and incorporates significant areas of natural vegetation that have earned Canberra the title of the “bush capital”. The growth and development of Canberra were hindered by the World Wars and the Great Depression, which exacerbated a series of planning disputes and the ineffectiveness a sequence of bodies that were to oversee the development of the city. The national capital emerged as a thriving city after World War II, as Prime Minister Robert Menzies championed its development and the National Capital Development Commission was formed with executive powers. Although the Australian Capital Territory is now self-governing, the federal government retains some influence through the National Capital Authority.

As the seat of the government of Australia, Canberra is the site of Parliament House, the High Court and numerous government departments and agencies. It is also the location of many social and cultural institutions of national significance, such as the Australian War Memorial, Australian National University, Australian Institute of Sport, National Gallery, National Museum and the National Library. The Australian Army’s officer corps are trained at the Royal Military College, Duntroon and the Australian Defence Force Academy is also located in the capital. (Some content courtesy of Wikipedia)
